This session was delivered by dietitians and a consultant specialising in diabetes and pancreatic cancer, covering everything you need to know about diagnosing and supporting your pancreatic cancer patients in managing their diabetes. We began with an introduction to diabetes (including type 3c diabetes) and pancreatic cancer, before getting into the medical management, nutritional management, and the impact and management of diabetes throughout a pancreatic cancer patient’s journey.
We shared case studies and tips throughout to help you as health professionals provide the best support to your patients.

This session is suitable for all healthcare professionals treating and supporting people with pancreatic cancer, no matter your level or role.
It is particularly relevant for UGI / HPB CNSs and consultants, diabetes specialist nurses and consultants, dietitians (specialists and non-specialists) and palliative care specialists.

Lisa Woodrow
Pancreatic Cancer Specialist Nurse, Pancreatic Cancer UK
Lisa has worked in a variety of settings including on a gastroenterology ward, intensive care unit, as a research nurse running clinical trials and latterly worked for over a decade as a specialist nurse looking after patients with pancreatic and liver cancer in a specialist centre in London. Her main focus has been providing care and support for patients having surgery. She has been a specialist nurse here at PCUK for 5 years
Eithne Costello
Professor of Molecular Oncology, Department of Molecular & Clinical Cancer Medicine, University of Liverpool, UK
Eithne currently leads a Cancer Research UK-funded programme called UK Early Detection Initiative for Pancreatic Cancer (UK-EDI), the aim of which is to learn how to detect pancreatic cancer in individuals newly diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. She sits on the UK management committee and is a Working Group lead for the European Union TRANSPAN COST ACTION (CA21116/Identification of biological markers for prevention and translational medicine in pancreatic cancer). She is a member of the Clinical Trial Pathology Advisory Group and chairs the European Study Group for Pancreatic Cancer translational steering committee. She is a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
Anna Burton
Senior Specialist Pancreatic Dietitian, Leeds Teaching Hospital
Anna has 25 years experience in clinical dietetics including parenteral nutrition, Newcastle University Medical School nutrition education, critical care, gastroenterology, immunology, paediatrics and burns; initially within the dietetic service provided by Newcastle Nutrition. In 2000 Anna joined the dietetic department at St James’s Hospital, Leeds specialising in gastrointestinal surgery and parenteral nutrition. Pancreatic surgical dietetics won Anna’s heart and she has jointly led the very busy pancreatic dietetic service since 2007 in Leeds.
Philip Johnston
Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes, Regional Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes, Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast
Dr Philip Johnston is a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and medicine in the Belfast Trust since 2014 and works out of both the Royal Victoria and Belfast City Hospitals. Together with nursing, dietetic and hepatobiliary colleagues he established a dedicated pancreatic diabetes clinic in Belfast in 2016 to manage patients with this form of diabetes and is active in research in this area. Philip is a member of the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network (NICRN) and a Multi-Center Trial Investigator in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
Laura McGeeney
Diabetes Specialist Dietitian, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust
Laura is a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian, having previously worked as a Pancreatic Specialist Dietitian for the past 13 years. This new diabetes knowledge and experience combines with a deep knowledge of nutrition and pancreatic disease to particularly support people with both. She is secretary of Nutrition Interest Group of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland and co-lead of the Nursing and AHP programme at the CRUK Cambridge Centre. She was the dietitian on the Guideline Committee for the Pancreatic Cancer NICE guideline and has written guidelines and patient information on many aspects of the nutritional management of pancreatic disease.
